There’s a lot of online home based business information floating around out there these days.  Unfortunately, there’s a lot of hype on online home based businesses making the rounds too.  And all that hype about online home based business is designed to do one thing—tap into people’s dreams of stay at home work that’s easy and painless.

The truth is that an online home based business is just like any other startup home based business, or any type of small business for that matter.  An online home based business takes effort and work, especially in the beginning. So if you’re thinking about starting an online home based business, be prepared to work and to work hard.

And don’t expect to become a millionaire overnight.  That’s another big myth concerning online home based business that probably shows up on your computer screen at least a dozen times a day.  You know what I mean, all those emails telling you that you can be making thousands of dollars a day just by taking advantage of this one’s or that one’s online home based business opportunity.  

Well, it isn’t going to happen.  In fact, many of those so-called online home based business opportunities will end up causing you nothing but headaches while they empty your wallets.  Yes, you can run a successful online home based business, but it takes time for your online home based business to be profitable, and it can take a long time for that to happen.  Knowing this upfront and having realistic expectations can save you from being misled by ads for online home based business opportunities.  It will also help you focus your time, energy and money in the right direction—on your valid online home based business opportunity.

Because an online home based business will take money to be successful, just like it takes time and effort.  You can’t just throw up a website for your home based business and expect traffic jams on your site.  First of all, you need a website for your home based business that’s as professional looking and customer friendly as possible, which can cost you quite a bit.  Then to get traffic and visitors to your online home based business website, you’ll need to advertise and invest in some ezine and email marketing as well.  While advertising and marketing costs for your online home based business aren’t as high as they would be for conventional advertising, online advertising and marketing do take money to do well and get results.

Then once your online home based business is up and running smoothly, even making some profit, don’t be fooled into thinking that’s all there is to it, that you can automate your online home based business, then sit back and do nothing.  Because, alas, this myth isn’t true either.  Even the biggest Internet gurus work at improving their businesses and put in a lot of long hours in the process.  They’re always developing and adding new products, writing articles and books, holding teleconferences and podcasts, going to conventions and workshops, all while still managing their online business or online home based business’ day-to-day tasks.  They put all that effort into their online home based business for one reason—they love it.  And, ultimately, that’s what separates successful online home based business owners from unsuccessful home based business owners: passion.
